4 x 4

Tagged by Anne. I haven’t done this before and rarely write more than a few sentences, so here goes.

4 jobs I’ve had
Salmon Fisher and Illustrator:
I just left school and spent the summer illustrating a book for a guy who owned the salmon fishing rights in Montrose. To get a better picture of this world I worked on the salmon nets. It involved two people in a rowing boat one person rowing while the other would put out the net the other end was attached to a rope held by a guy walking in parallel to the boat. In this way it was fairly easy to take all the fish from the pool which you’d have to kill with a stick called a priest and put into a box. If an eye popped out you’d have a box of glass eyes to replace them with.

Random Art Projects: As a skint art student I did pavement drawings to get some money for the summer. It wasn’t real pavement drawings with chalk but a large charcoal drawing on a huge piece of paper. The drawings I did were Batman and Jurassic Park. I lasted two weeks on Argyle Street in Glasgow before I couldn’t handle it any more and signed on by pretending I wasn’t going back to art school. I’ve also made concrete crocodiles for the Earl of Glasgow.

Bar man: I spent far too much time working in Nice’n’Sleazy. I’d just left Glasgow Art School, I had some art work in the pub, the Brit pop era was in full motion and Glasgow was a great place to be if you liked music. For a couple of years it felt to me like the centre of the world.

Web Designer: I first started work as web designer without ever really knowing what web sites were. I had done a few record covers, was a bit arty so got the job. I really enjoyed my job and quickly learnt as much as I could and the company I worked for got sold for 38 million pounds. Then the internet bubble popped. A few jobs later to where I am now.

4 TV shows I’m watching
The Wire:
I know, I know, its true though.
Avatar: I love animation and stumbled across this. It’s a cartoon on Nickelodeon but somehow is profound, funny and truly great.
Lost: I think I may be one of the last people watching this, but I’m going to stick with this to the end. Like I did with Babylon 5, and the X files (shakes futile fist)
Masterchef: Its crazily bombastic “this is about endurance, this is about stamina” and dramatic with its bizarre over the top soundtrack (was that the music from the Matrix?). I loved the potential for ridiculous dishes and uncooked chicken. “She has been really tactical with this dish”. Comedy genius.

4 places I’ve been
Hong Kong:
One of my first ever memories is being on a boat really close to the water and seeing the city skyline.
Kuwait: My Dad worked there for a good long time. I was used to playing outside in the Dumfries countryside so playing in sand was almost like the country minus the trees, animals and grass.
New York: I’d like to go back again, it’s like the movies.
Gourock: I know it’s where I live but I’ve only been here a year and its ace. Moving here has made me like Glasgow again.

4 music artists I’m listening to right now
Electrelane:
Mogwai:
Glasgow’s finest
Blood on the Wall: like the Pixies, lots of fun rock action
Adele (Hometown Glory):
I’ll tag Ronnie and Eireann
